A categoria de melhor actor secundário é na minha opinião a categoria onde encontramos as melhores performances do ano. Não só nos nomeados como alguns dos que foram esquecidos. No lote dos esquecidos ficou a extraordinária performance de Albert Brooks em “Drive”, Viggo Mortensen em “A Dangerous Method” ou até Armie Hammer em “J. Edgar”. No entanto, só há lugar para cinco candidatos e penso que apesar de toda a controvérsia acabaram por ser bem escolhidos. Christopher Plummer, Nick Nolte, Max Von Sydow, Kenneth Branagh e Jonah Hill são estes os contemplados com a nomeação da Academia.
Jonah Hill é claramente o mais novo e o único estreante nesta categoria. Aos 29 anos Jonah arrecada a sua primeira nomeação com o primeiro desempenho mais sério da sua carreira. Em “Moneybal” interpreta Peter Brand, um jovem apaixonado por desporto que introduz a estatística no baseball de forma a combater as dificuldades monetárias da equipa. Este personagem valeu a Jonah nomeações para todas as entregas de prémios e apesar do seu papel secundário houve momentos em que graças à sua extraordinária interpretação conseguiu ofuscar Brad Pitt. Não me parece que vá ganhar o Oscar dada a concorrência, mas a nomeação já é por si só uma grande vitória.
Nick Nolte soma com esta 3 nomeações ao Oscar, aos 71 anos este fantástico actor congratula-nos com uma das melhores interpretações do ano em “Warrior”. (Desviando-me do tema de conversa quero aqui manifestar a minha indignação perante a falta de reconhecimento que foi dada a “Warrior” um dos melhores filmes do ano.) Todas as cenas em que Paddy Conlon (Nick Nolte) aparece no filme são de uma carga emotiva extraordinária. É a prova de que se pode fazer muito com um papel pequeno. A cena em que está embriagado ao lado do seu filho Tommy (Tom Hardy) é incrivelmente emocionante, arrisco-me a classifica-la na melhor do ano. É quase certo que não ganhe o Oscar, mas não é por falta de talento. 
Max Von Sydow, mais uma interpretação curta mas muito marcante. Com 82 anos e duas nomeações ao Oscar, Max foi o nomeado que muito poucos esperavam. Contudo, a sua interpretação em “Extremamente Alto, Incrivelmente Perto” é deliciosamente enternecedora apesar de não dizer uma única palavra. A surpresa manifestada tem a ver com as críticas ao filme, que eu não percebo. Recorde-se que “Extremamente Alto, Incrivelmente Perto”esta nomeado na categoria de melhor filme. Não me parece que Max Von Sydow vá levar o Oscar para casa, mas nem sabem o quão feliz fiquei pela sua nomeação. (Sou um verdadeiro fã do filme).
Kenneth Branagh consegue a sua 5º nomeação ao Oscar com o retrato eximio do Sir Laurence Olivier onde nem a voz escapou. Em "A minha semana com a Marylin" Kenneth intreperta o realizador e actor casado com a estupenda Vivien Leigh que quase perdeu o seu temperamento com Marylin Monroe enquanto gravam o filme "O príncipe e a Corista". Um desempenho muito razoável que com certeza não o fara ganhar o Oscar mas, que nos chamou mais uma vez à atenção o talento do actor Britânico.
E por fim o claro vencedor: Christopher Plummer. Caso Plummer não vença essa será a maior surpresa da noite. O Globo de Ouro, o Bafta e o SAG Award tiveram apenas um destino: Plummer. E de facto, Christopher merece estes e todos os prémios. De realçar o facto de esta ser apenas a segunda nomeação na sua extraordinária carreira e que a anterior foi apenas há dois anos atrás com “A Última Estação”. Em “Assim é o Amor” Plummer interpreta Hal Fields um idoso que após a morte da sua esposa revela a sua homossexualidade ao seu filho, tentando ser feliz nos últimos anos da sua vida enquanto luta contra um cancro. Uma interpretação soberba de um dos veteranos de Hollywood. Estou ansioso para o ouvir discursar. 
Não há espaço para duvidas Christopher Plummer leva o Oscar. Pode não ser o melhor de todos os desempenhos em competição mas Christopher merece-o quanto mais não seja pela sua carreira estupenda. De realçar que caso ganhe Christopher Plummer ou Max Von Sydow irá bater-se um recorde: o de o actor mais velho a ganhar um Oscar. Recorde-se que ambos os actores têm 82 anos.
The category for best supporting actor is, in my opinion, the category in which we find the best performances of the year. Not only in the nominees, but also in the forgotten ones. In the forgotten ones bunch was the extraordinary performance of Albert Brooks in “Drive”, Viggo Mortensen in “A Dangerous Method” or even Armie Hammer in “J. Edgar”. However, there’s only place for five contenders and, I think that, though all the controversy, they ended up being well chosen. . Christopher Plummer, Nick Nolte, Max Von Sydow, Kenneth Branagh e Jonah Hill are the contemplated with the nomination of the Academy. 
Jonah Hill is clearly the youngest and the only debutant in this category. At the age of 29, Jonah gets his first nomination in the most serious performance of his career. In “Moneyball” he plays Peter Brand, a passionate for sports, that introduces statistics in baseball, in order to reduce the economic difficulties of the team. This character was made him get nominations for every award ceremony and, though his supporting role, there were moments in which he was able to outshine Brad Pitt, thanks to his extraordinary performance. I don’t think that he will win the Oscar due to the rivals, but the nomination is already a victory.
Nick Nolte has his third nomination to the Oscar, at the age of 71, this amazing actor welcome us with one of the best performances of the year in “Warrior” ( Skipping the subject, I want to state my disapproval to the lack of recognition to “Warrior”, one of the best movies of the year.) All the scenes in which Paddy Conlon (Nick Nolte) appears in the film have tremendously emotional. He proves that it’s possible to have a great performance with a small part. The scene in which he his drunk, next to his son Tommy (Tom Hardy) is incredibly moving, I dare to classify it as the best of the year. It’s almost certain that it won win the Oscar, however, it’s not out of lack of talent.
Max Von Sydow, another short interpretation, rather remarkable. With 82 years and two Oscar nominations, Max was the unexpected nominee. Yet, his interpretation in “Extremely Loud, Incredibly Close” is deliciously heartwarming, though he doesn’t even say a word. The big surprise is due to the reviews of the movie, which I don’t get it. Remember that “Extremely Loud, Incredibly Close” is nominated in the category for best movie. I don’t believe that Max Von Sydow will win an Oscar home, but you can’t imagine my happiness as for this nomination (I’m a huge fan of the movie).
Kenneth Branagh gets his fifth Oscar nomination for the amazing interpretation of Sir Laurence Olivier, where not even the voice was forgotten. In “My Week With Marylin”, Kenneth Branagh plays the director and actor married to the splendid Vivien Leigh that had almost lost her temper with Marylin Monroe while shooting the movie “The Prince and the Showgirl”. A very good performance that won’t make him win the Oscar, but as caught our attention, once again.
At last, the obvious winner: Christopher Plummer. In case Plummer doesn’t win, that will be the biggest surprise of the evening. The Golden Globe, the BAFTA, the SAG Award had only one destiny: Plummer. In fact, Christopher deserves this and all other awards. To enhance that this is only the second nomination of his extraordinary career and that the previous was just two years ago with “The Last Station”. In “Beginners”, Plummer plays Hal Fields, an elderly man that after the death of his loving wife reveals his homosexuality to his son, so as to try to be happy in the last years of his life, while fighting cancer. A superb interpretation of a veteran of Hollywood. I can’t wait to hear his speech.
There’s not doubt: Christopher Plummer will win the Oscar. It might not be the best performance in the competition, but Christopher deserves it, even it’s only for his stunning career. To emphasize that if either Christopher Plummer or Max Von Sydow win, a record will be broke: the oldest actor winning an Oscar. Remember that both have 82 years.
